    Default First Prole Day Today

In my 18 years, I've never had a job. But for a few conflicting reasons, I decided to get one. I agree, it is in my best interests.

Well, it's warehouse work. Meaning it pays better than general service/food/whatever industry does. I pick my shifts, I can work 8 hours, or 28. [The more I work, the sooner I can quit, once my funding money is ready.]

The problem is, I lift 80lb boxes and stack them 12 feet up. That's no easy feat, even for me, especially for extended periods of time.

Tomorrow I observe to see the easiest jobs in the warehouse, and take over them.

    Work smarter, not harder.

Yeah, it definitely does apply to all types of work.

I remember during one summer break I was working in a pork processing factory and on the first day I was put on a fast-moving production line and it was back breaking work (I thought I was going to hate the whole summer if I could manage to get through more than a few days).

Anyway, the next day I was late arriving as my lift had been delayed and when I arrived to start work there was someone already doing what I had been doing - so I needed to find some other stuff to do. I was educated and had a good grasp of math... so the floor manager had me start to take order in the chill rooms and ensure all meat was at the correct temperature (i.e. so that it all met health and safety regulations).

I done a great job and basically decided I would work smarter, not harder and sorted out the storage chills so that meat due out for orders would be easily accessed when needed and fresh meat never got in the way. The manager loved the system I came up with and I basically done no real work for the rest of the summer.

The manager introduced me to the owner of the company and I basically became the 'go-to-guy' with the owner of the company requesting me to do stuff rather than some of the experienced people as I had showed the right attitude and had improved the efficiency of their production lines on my 2nd day in the job. This meant if anything needed done it was given to me to sort out as I was seen as a problem solver. I had no experience and almost every day I was doing something different - either by my own choosing or because people were falling behind.

At one stage I was operating a production line on my own (for about 5 days)... it was normally done by 5 people... I just didn't leave it on constantly and done a 1/4 pallet of meat at a time instead of running a full pallet through.

Even though it was actually real work (as I said I done no real work earlier), I enjoyed it so much that it didn't feel like work as I was in full control of what was being done... if I needed a break the machine would mysteriously develop a fault and I would be able to fix it

The moral of the story is working harder to achieve something is never the answer... work smarter and you will accomplish things much quicker and easier.

Edit: That job was my favourite job ever... even though it was only for about 10 weeks during a univerity summer.

Kinda reminds me of the time my dad put me to work in our drugs factory, it was an ordeal for a 10 year old to do things we hire much older people to do, but it taught me more than any business course could in people management and how to establish a rapport with ANYONE (I tell you, if you can get any blue collar person to respect you, you have it made as a manager).
Just be sure that the labor literally doesn't break your back, muscular as you are, there is such a thing as a burnout and you probably won't feel it until you're 30 but overstraining yourself is a definite nono if you can avoid it.

Have fun, hope you learn much much more

    Just Because Ok!

Factory work isn't that bad, I kinda liked it. I flirted with all the new hot temp chicks to pass the time. Your feet kinda hurt at the end of the day, so I suggest you start gellin'! ie, Dr. Scholls

Most of the warehouse are losers and druggy people, so the only thing I have to do to establish respect is to show them that I'll snap necks should the need arise. I already have the physique for it. It's really quite primitive.

    We don't have any temps

And I agree, my toes were killing me, but hey, the more work I do now, the sooner I can quit, so just going to have to push through.
