I'm a teen tring to bring in some cash for the family

Hey all, I'm Alex (Or Sasha if you will, russian nickname .. dont ask and yes it's a guy's name )

I've been making websites for around 2 years and fiddling around DP for around one. Mostly to learn the basics of being a webmaster and such. A while ago I started making a few bucks with Clickbank promoting this game testing product but it wasn't too much. That kind of fell off and now I'm back to studying, photoshopping, and programming in my free time.

The thing is, I'm going to college soon (I'm set on University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, wish me luck for acceptance ) and my parents are financially stressed out as it is, seeing as the crashing Orbitz stock ignited a lay-off frenzy and left my mom unemployed. I want to do all I can to help out a little bit. I know it's probably not going to make too much of a difference but if I can atleast hit the $1,000 mark by the time next September goes by that would be good. I would also probably continue that business through my college days. For the time being I would like to just be financially independent from my parents so they can ease their stress a little bit. (They dont want me having a job because they think my grades will drop from all the time wasted)

I'm extremely experienced with graphics (photoshop, illustrator, 3d, you name it) and programming (C++, Java, PHP, Ruby, Javascript) but as far as promotion goes .. well ... let me put it this way. Marketing is the smiley on the right and I am the smiley on the left. I suck at marketing to a laughable level. I've noticed how experienced Norb is, as well as many other people on this forum, at combining those two skills. He takes his graphics skill to make a great brandable landing page and then promotes the crap out of it.

I joined because I realize I have potential (who doesn't?) but so far, my efforts have not availed.

Not even to mention earning some trust around here Because i'm planning to stay around because this forum knocks the socks off DP. That place is just shady.

Rest assured, if I, with my suckage computer skills (basic html took me 2 months to learn) can make good money, you have just got it made. Marketing is all about presentation and image, not merely good coding .

Welcome to the forum and with your skills there is no reason why you couldn't be successful at internet marketing... after all, part of marketing is branding and networking with others.

You can always outsource the promotion aspect... either financially or through bartering. For example, you could team up with someone who is good with SEO but sucks with graphics... and do a trade-off. You do their graphics and they do your promotion - doesn't require cash transactions. However, it will take a bit of networking to find the right people to partner up with and work alongside.

Through using this forum and helping others where you can help them, you will find other people more willing to help you. Overall, it becomes a win-win situation which is beneficial to the community as a whole.

Im the tech guy - Probably not to your level, but I too have self taught html/php/VB/Delphi/C++/SQL and A little Javascript. But, its all self taught so im not the bomb lol - But consider me the vBulletin techy - Forum problems.. you let me know.

Thanks for the great welcome everyone! Posting in the intro thread was definitely a good idea.

But, haha I should probably emphasize that when i said i was good with graphics and programming, the "extreme" was meant for the graphics only. I've been doing that consistently for a good 7 years and while I'm pretty well off with programming/scripting, I'm no bill gates I seem to have made the impression to be lol

I'm ecstatic, this is the 5th best engineering university in the US. Been up late studying for finals and such so I haven't been active on the forums. Well that's it, just wanted to update and brag a little bit Just found out last night

Keep studying mate! I finish uni in 6 months and ill be doing IM full time (if all goes to plan which it looks like it is), but even so Uni takes priority!

For me its hard to concentrate on uni when i see money coming in the door. Because lets be honest money is what spins the world around, and we wouldn't be here if we wernt after it! Im basically studying IM so i kinda got it easy lol, but even so dont miss any deadlines because of it. Been there and nearly missed one, i kicked myself so hard, having to do nearly 9000 words in 3 days, it wasnt fun. I still gotta great grade, but it wasnt worth the panic and the no sleep for days on end.

Anyywaayy enough of the advice lol - WELL DONE

Just keep studying lol.

Hah even in high school I feel your pain. I'm studying for finals right now and all I'm thinking about is my Neverblue application =P I think I might take a course in IM once I'm in college and everything. Is it much different than the stuff I would learn on the forums and reading blogs and such?

I bet that you'll learn more, much, much more valuable information from forums, and most of all EXPERIENCE. Actually being in the trenches, so to speak, will teach you so much more than anything else could ever teach you.

You don't have to know EVERYTHING before you even start. Even if you just know a little bit, take it and run with it, and learn more as you go along. The most important part is taking action. By far.
